Foreign Ministry Spokesman Liu Jianchao's Remarks on Taiwan Authorities' Application for "UN Membership under the name of Taiwan"
2007-07-23

Q: Taiwan Authorities wrote to UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon to apply for "UN Membership under the name of Taiwan" on July 19th. What's your comment?

A: It's stipulated in Article 4 of the UN Charter, Article 58 of the Provisional Rules of Procedure of the Security Council and Article 134 of the Rules of Procedure of the UN General Assembly that only sovereign states can apply for UN Membership.

There is but one China in the world with Taiwan an integral part of it. The government of People's Republic of China is the sole legitimate government representing the whole of China. This position universally held by the international community is completely in line with the UN Charter and has been confirmed by UN General Assembly Resolution 2758.

Taiwan Authorities'  attempt to apply for "UN Membership under the name of Taiwan" is a separatist act of the "Taiwan Independence" secessionist forces to tear Taiwan apart from China. We resolutely oppose it and will follow closely the development there. Taiwan Authorities'  attempt to split China will absolutely not succeed.
