Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Ma Zhaoxu's Remarks on Karzai's Re-election as Afghan President
2009-11-04

Q: Afghanistan's Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) declared that the second round of voting in its presidential election scheduled for November 7 had been cancelled due to the withdrawal of the other candidate Abdullah, and Karzai had been elected the next President of Afghanistan. What's China's comment?

A: China has taken note of the developments in the Afghan presidential election. China respects the choice of the Afghan people, and congratulates Mr. Karzai on being re-elected President of Afghanistan. As a friendly neighbor of Afghanistan, China will continue to work for stronger China-Afghanistan friendly relations and cooperation, support its reconstruction process, and sincerely hopes that Afghanistan could achieve peace, stability and development at an early date.
