Consul General Lu Xu' Remarks at the Reception Marking the 68th Anniversary of the Founding of the People's Republic of China
2017/09/30

Distinguished guests,

Fellow Chinese compatriots,

Ladies and Gentlemen,

Good evening.

It is my great honor to be with you at this wonderful moment, celebrating the 68th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China.

My husband and I and A-bu, our 4-year-old little dog, arrived here just one week ago. Thanks for the direct flight of Hainan airline which made our trip much easier. A-bu enjoyed the Chinese cabin service very much, but it is the time for her to learn English.

On my trip to Calgary, I met several Canadian businessmen. They have engaged with China for quite a long time. 5 years ago, most of them spent a lot of time and money travelling back and forth. Now they just stay at home, doing business with China, making more money, while spending more time with their kids.

How is this possible? I asked them what the secret is. They said, just throw the iphone away, buy a Huawei and download the Wechat. It may sound like a joke, but no doubt about it, Huawei cellphone plus Wechat, something like Facebook, are the most favorable tools in China for easier and better business. Recently, Huawei released a new chip kirin 970, which powers the phone with artificial intelligence. By reading the user's mind, the phone can put forward customer-friendly options in a minute out of Big data. In 2016, the active monthly users of Wechat reached 900 million, including 100 million registered outside of China, among which 80% use Wechat as business resources or networks. The recent G20 Hamburg Summit has just recognized the digital economy as an important engine for future economic expansion.

This is a strong evidence of how far the modern China has gone comparing with the one 68 years ago, or even 5 years ago. Rapid growth rate, second largest economy, cheap commodities can no longer draw a full picture of China today. High-speed rail, Alipay, shared bicycle and online shopping have been acclaimed as the new China Four Great Inventions, a new life style stunning the world, and a new business opportunity enabling millions of small and medium sized enterprises getting thrived. According to statistics, China has not only lifted over 700 million people out of poverty, but also contributed about 30% to the global growth for the recent 5 years. The 19th National Congress of the Communist Party of China will be held in Beijing next month, this meeting will review China's overall progress in the past five years, draw lessons and experiences, make action plans and design fundamental policies, a meeting that will help make sure the giant ship of China will continue to go full steam ahead but ride the waves evenly.

What does a stable and prosperous China mean to the world or Canada? What's the point for China and Canada to be closer since we are so far apart in distance?

Today, we are still living in a world where peace turns out to be something hard to come by. China has always committed herself to the world peace by standing for settling differences through talks rather than fights, and is capable of being a constructive partner of Canada in maintaining world peace and order.

Today, never have we seen such a desire of people for a better life but we are still facing the problems of underdevelopment or unbalanced economy. China has always been pursuing common prosperity through promoting infrastructure and connectivity with other countries, without interfering or seeking to change their social systems or developing strategies. This is the same goal of China proposing the Belt and Road Initiative. In the coming 5 years, China is expected to import 8 trillion US dollars of goods, attract 600 billion US dollars of investment and make 750 billion US dollars of outbound investment. Chinese tourists will make 700 million overseas visits. Though Canada is not located along the belt or the road, it's never too late to grasp the opportunities and share the benefits in turning the initiative into reality.

Today, inadequate global governance makes it difficult to adapt to the changing world. As an active and reliable participant of the global governance, China can be a stronger supporter of Canada in dealing with global issues like climate change, environmental protection, free trade or anti-protectionism.

Ladies and gentlemen,

I am lucky enough to be posted in Calgary at the right momentum of Sino-Canadian relationship. I am encouraged by the visits between Premier Li Keqiang and Prime Minister Justin Trudeau last September, which have yielded fruitful results and pointed a right direction to enhance our relations.

I am lucky enough to be posted in Calgary where the most beautiful parks are surrounding. My consular district covers "wild rose country", "the bread basket of Canada" and "Canada's last frontier". I can't wait but to explore the uniqueness of these provinces and find out more advantages bridging them with China.

I am lucky enough to be posted in Calgary since I am not alone. There are so many friends, both from China and Canada, shared the same value with me and devoted yourselves to promoting more extensive bilateral cooperations. I am ready to join hands with you to further enhance our contacts, broaden our cooperation and facilitate people to people exchanges. I do believe only in this way will both of us usher in a better future.

In conclusion, let me propose a toast--

To the health of everyone,

To the prosperity of our great nations,

And to the friendship between China and Canada!

Happy Chinese Moon Festival.

Thank you, Xie Xie!
